    Bavarian MG 08

Boys, it has been a really long time since the last post. Actually has to do something with the little fact that 2 little girls are living with us now. My twin daughters are 10 months old and I am kind of busy since their birth. However here is a paintjob I did for the 100 year anniversary of the start of the Great War. We decided in our club to reactivate our trench gaming table and to learn how to play „Through the Mood and the Blood“ by ToFatLardies Gaming Club. We are not sure if this will be the system of our choice, but it is a start.

We already had one game but we made plenty of mistakes so it is to early to give any comments on the system. Here is what I have painted.

The MG 08 is a model by Great War Miniatures I painted them as a late war unit since the machine gun is painted with camo. The helmets should have the same pattern but I decided to go with grey ones, since this would look to busy. Sometimes I make decisions based on design.

    World War 1 picture background

Way back our club Spieltrieb Frankfurt presented a WW1 game on the german Wargamingshow Tactica. I painted some additional models since we plan to play „Through the mud and the blood“ by too fat Lardies. Once I painted the new models I was tired about my green background which was not appropriate for the historical background of the late war models.

Therefore I created four elements for picturing my models: A background print, which is a colored version of an historical image, a hill segment with barbed wire, a trench section with a fire step and a wall section with sandbags on top.

The first photo shooting was quite good. The elements profed to be quite variable, it is possible to use them in different angles and combinations.

  • Grand Fleets – The Battle of the Denmark Strait

Grand Fleets – The Battle of the Denmark Strait

When I bought the game Grand Fleets from Majestic Twelve Games I always wanted to replay the famous hunt for the battleship Bismarck. So I bought many World War 2 ships to replay this scenario. My ships are from Hallmark in the 1:6000 scale. I bought them from Magister Militum. On the picture above you can imagine the size of the ships compared to the 5ct coin.

    The German ships

I was a long time uncertain how to paint the models. I studied a lot websites in the internet to find the correct camouflage pattern for the Bismarck. But the camouflage pattern was mainly grey, so I decided to paint the two ships in the pattern of the testing period in the Baltic Sea. I don’t like Swastika on my models so I tried to paint them in the style of the movie „The Great Dictator“ by Charles Chaplin.

Later I want to replay submarine battles, so I bought a blister of German submarines, too. (This models were not involved in the hunt for the Bismarck)

    The British ships

I like painting ships with a camouflage pattern and find it more interesting than all grey ships. So I painted the British ships in some of their camouflage patterns, too. Most patterns are from later periods of the war.

    The Game

Grand Fleets is a very flexible game. It has rulesets for different scale sizes and you can play the game with a hex grid or with measurement tape. I decided to play the game with a measurement tape because it is much easier to find a game board: You just need blue fabric! 😉

We replayed the Battle of the Denmark Street (Hood, Prince of Wales vs. Bismarck, Prinz Eugen). I was a bit worried because I did not know if the gameplay would work with such few models. But the game is great. You should use the option of simultaneous movement. Both players write their moves on a card and after that move the ships as written down. It is very fun to fool your opponent with an unexpected move into a very good fire position. The game mechanism allows it easy to integrate more players. We played 2 vs. 2 and had a lot of fun. After a good opening for the Bismarck, the two British ships became more than a match for the Germans. After the Bismarck has been sunk the Prinz Eugen startedt two final torpedo attacks on the Hood but the ship became itself sunk. So the two British shops won the battle but were heavily damaged. It was a great game.

I hope you like my models. In a few weeks I will write a review of the rulebook.

    Greetings Glorfunzel

  • Last Campaign Game with my Fallschirmjäger company

Last Campaign Game with my Fallschirmjäger company

Italian Village, 15mm, Wargaming, Rusus Models, Table by Frank Bauer, Terrainmodels designed by Rusus and Tankred

First of all I would like to mention the excellent gaming table and the great Game I had with Frank Bauer. He built a great italian Gaming Table using the Italian Village Rusus and me designed last year. The models are still available and the range will be expanded. I use these great pictures in order to illustrate the army I used for the last 3 years mainly when playing FoW.

Yesterday I had the last game within our Club´s campaign in Mid War Tunisia with my Fallschirmjäger company. The game was a really good one, I fought against a 1300 points US paratrooper company attackin in the „King of the hill“ scenary vs. my 1300 points defending Germans. Usually I do not talk very much about my games, since I play on a regular basis and keeping track of these games is quite a lot of work.

But this game was the last in the campaign which means that my Fallschirmjäger will now stay in their case for a while since my Hungarians will be used in our upcoming Ostfront Club Campaign. I started to collect the company in 2007, so it was almost three years of gaming and painting with this troops. I had to learn a lot about the german fighting doctrine e.g. Kampfgruppen or Stormtrooper movement and how to use them and not to forget about them.

The Fallschirmjägercompany was very complicated to build and understand since there are lots of small weapons and different choices. In our campaign you are allowed to build an individual list for every game. Therefore it is very important to paint different choices in order to react to certain scenarios and different point sizes. In our campaign the size of the opponent force is usually not the same than yours since that is part of the strategical map movement.

For me the most important Platoons in an FJ company are:

    HQ
Two Panzerknackerteams in the HQ are absolutely great. If you have 10 points in spare you can add two valueable tank hitting teams to your combat platoons. The Püppchen Werfer or the Anti tank rifle are also very valuable against Tank assaults since they both are man packed gun teams and may be attached to your combat platoons or Kampfgruppe. The light mortar options are not that good in my opionion. They are quite expensive. I would recommend all collectors to paint Stummelwerfer as a Mortar Platoon. Then you can use them as a Mortar Platoon or a Mortar Option in the HQ. Quite flexible!

    Combat Platoons
Always paint two full infantry platoons of your Fallschirmjäger, always choose Panzerknacker SMG teams as command. They are really great. I tried a lot of army lists with 2 or 3 platoons infantry, which work excellent. Usually with 3 Infantry platoons there is at least one which is not at full strength. I painted an additional Pioneer platoon, which is interesting for games with fortifications or in games where you have to attack. A flamethrower which may pin down defenders could be very interesting. Moreover Pioneers have a good anti tank rating. So if you already have two platoons you should go for pioneers. Since the gear is pretty much the same you could change your whole company in a Pioneer troop with just up to 9 flamethrowers, if you have 9 sections in your combat platoons. Personally I did not want to paint the Pioneer HQ Options and sticked to the Fallschirmjäger Company. I prefer the latter since Pioneers do cost a lot of points.

    Weapon Platoons
The FJ MG Platoon is great, since they may be attached to combat platoons as well. A must have for any FJ army. There may be two of these, but I painted only one. If you play a lot of infantry, Italians e.g. consider to paint two. But I think this will rarely happen. The Light Gun Platoon is sometimes very important. I often played with only 1300 points because within our Club´s campaign and then any anti tank capacity is welcome. The light weight guns are an interesting mixture when looking at their rules: Man packed, no gun shield, recoiless. One intersting aspect is that they can be part of a Kampfgruppe, as they are a weapon´s platoon. I played them quite often and they played often a mayor role in close combats with tanks next to objectives. The mortars are for sure a very important choice. Fallschirmjäger should often use smoke as an option vs. tanks and for attacking in close combat. You should definetly paint this platoon, I did not but should have. The mortars can be a HQ choice, too. That can be interesting in order to have one platoon with artillery and infantry on the table.

    Support Platoons
Any FoW gamer knows how essential Anti tank guns are in the game. So is for the Fallschirmjäger. First I painted the PAK 36 which was named Heeresanklopfgerät (Army´s Knocking device) because it was to light for Mid War Tanks. Without a Stielgranate it is almost impossible to knock out a Stuart from the front. Usually you may protect your infantry against tank assaults with that guns. With a Stielgranate there may be some chance but the low RoF and the distance are quite hard. Usually I use it against infantry, Universal carriers and Recce platoons (if I know about them). I painted one alternative and one Addition to the PAK 36: Marder II and PAK 40. Both have the excellent 7,5cm gun and provide excellent anti tank options. If they appear in the game your opponent will automatically focus on these platoons. Usually I only fielded one of the 7,5 cm options. The Marder II was reduced in his point costs in the „North Africa“ book by Battlefront. Therefore I used them often in the last month whereas I did not when they costed 30 points more per tank.

The heavy mortars were one of my favourite choices. They proved to be much better than the mointain gun, which I think is crap in the old book. In the new book the mountaingun was improved, but I still prefer one heavy mortar platoon sometimes im combination with medium mortars. For sure there is an Nebelwerferoption and more, but I prefer to play a straight FJ Force at this point. I am planning to have some allied forces in my upcoming army.

The Flak Choice was often on the table when I painted them. They provide affordable aircraft protection and may be used against infantry and vehicles, too. They are not unbeatable, but the price is low and they may move 10cm and an additional 10 cm Stormtrooper move. Air support was often chosen by my Allied opponents, so a general army list should contain at least 2 of these guns.

I hope my ideas may help future Fallschirmjäger Company Commanders a little bit. Comments on these thoughts are welcome.

I had approximatly 20 games with this force, they fought more victories than defeats, maily because I could always use different choices in my composition. When I learned to use the Stormtrooper rule, smoke, Combat Attachments and Kampfgruppe the force was very flexible and interesting. Like in the real war every game saw a lot of losses amongst the Fallschirmjäger – the Airborne Infantry was stubborn, brave and somewhat fanatic which ended often deadly in the hard circumstances in Tunisia and Italy.

  • Fallschirmjäger Pionier Zug

    Fallschirmjäger Pionier Zug

Now I am very close to have a finished army, although this blog has a different name. The Fallschirmjägerpioniere will only be followed by one complete platoon and maybe another 6 flamethrower teams. For sure there is one single option more which could be added after I model a light mortar team which is the mountain gun platoon. The values were changed in North Africa so the Fallschirmjäger artillery is now an option worth painting.

However I am very pleased with the performance of the heavy mortars. Adding another light mortar team, bearing in mind that the HQ has an option for light mortar teams too, this should be enough.

Currently I was interested in having flamethrowers in the game since my club colleges often field tanks. The anti tank rating of pioneers sound very attractive, too. If I put an opel blitz truck from the various trucks I have on the table, I have a pioneer support truck, too.

In order to differenciate between my infantry platoons I decided to paint olive jump smocks. All other platoons have Luftwaffe splinter camo painted on. It came out very nice. Koch came with this blister too. In our club heroes are not very popular since the rules are somewhat exaggerated. van der Heydte for example, the lord of the living dead, is really ridiculous. Therefore I manned his team as a command team with 3 miniatures. He has the Luftwaffe Schiffchen hat and a splinter camo jump smock. Some of the models have rank insignia of Leutnant and Oberjäger, Koch himself the Oberstleutnant rank.

I have chosen an Glider assault platoon blister for my pioneers and painted some additional teams manned out of my Bitz box. Since Glider assault teams have MG42 teams, too I added one. If I don´t need them they can be treated as mere infantry teams. Usually we agree in the club to allow such minor proxy gaming.

Doing the photos it came into my mind that the drop canister is not needed for a glider assault team. However the platoon could now be fielded as an airborne pioneer platoon, too.

  • The Beginning of a Fallschirmjäger Company

The Beginning of a Fallschirmjäger Company

Playing the United Kingdom for years now I finally started to build a new axis Flames of War army. To have an ideal opponent for my british forces painted for the italian theatre I have chosen a Fallschirmjägerkompanie.

German Fallschirmjäger platoon, painted by Tankred

I start to show you my efforts with a heavy Fallschirmjäger MG Platoon although the first platoon to be painted was a Fallschirmjäger Platoon. Usually playing a british Motor company I just could not imagine that the germans have more than 6 teams in a platoon. So I forgot to glue and paint three teams of my first Jäger Platoon, I will show it soon.

I decided to paint all teams with a splinter camo smock and tropical trousers. Many pictures from italy show that kind of combination for italy 1943 and I think it really looks good.

I wanted to paint this army somewhat quicker than my british army. Therefore I changed the grade of detail. Moreover I wanted to paint without Blacklining. I like Blacklining on 15mm models but on the other hand I want to test how realistic an army can look if you paint in a different way.

In order to differenciate between platoons I painted little platoon markings on the bases as well as Luftwaffe rank insignia on the command teams. The markings are the same the platoon´s weapon container is painted with. Although the italian theatre saw not many jump actions I painted them since I would love to play the Death from above mission. The marking itself is taken from my imagination since I only found pictures showing parts of the weapon containers. If somebody can provide some information I would appreciate.

Finally I made some battle markers to replace the plastic markers with text on them. The „Frankfurter Schule“ i.e. the spirit of wargaming in my home town once told me that there should be no disturbing elements on the gaming table. I liked that idea from Decebalus  and Tellus and finally made Models for „Gone to ground“, „Dug in“, „Moved at the double“ and „Pinned“.

Currently I work on the second Jäger Platoon and on an Marder II Platoon.
